COVID-19 Critical Care Consortium (CCCC) registry, at the AAN 2021 Meeting gave a sense of some relief by reporting only a 2.2 percent Stroke rate in critically ill COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). They also reported that Haemorrhagic stroke is commoner than ischaemic stroke (46 percent vs 32 percent), while the remaining 22 percent are unspecified stroke. Severely ill COVID patients admitted to an ICU, did not prove stroke to be a common complication in their study. They also regarded Haemorrhagic stroke to be significantly associated with an increased risk of death, while ischaemic stroke did not increase the risk of death.

Another large cohort study presented at ISC 2021 demonstrated the overall ischaemic stroke rate to be 0.75 percent in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

Although the current CCCC cohort specifically counted new-onset stroke as a complication among COVID-19 patients requiring ICU admission, while the ISC study did not.
